I have been seriously involved in nature photography for nearly 40 years. For nearly 30 years, I sold photographs at arts and crafts shows around the country, and also at galleries. I have won a number of prizes and awards, and my work has appeared in books, magazines, and now on the Internet.
As a photographer, I am self-taught, and I have worked at it pretty hard, reading, looking at other people's pictures, and doing extensive experiments and tests on my own. As an example of these experiments, I developed a new version of the Ansel Adams zone system for determining exposure and development of black and white negatives.
The reason I take pictures is that I cannot help it. I love to wander in the outdoors. When I do that, I see all sorts of things I think are exciting and beautiful. I want to show them to other people, so they can enjoy them too. I take pictures so I can do that. It is perhaps not a deep philosophy, but it is my own.
I am a past exhibiting member of the Michigan Guild of Artists and Artisans, a past president and life member of the Ohio Arts and Crafts Guild, and a member of the Texas Photographic Society.I now live in south Texas, near Corpus Christi, with my wife and best friend (that is only one person, not two). It is about a mile to the nearest neighbor, and it is 20 miles one way to the nearest place you can buy anything. It is 60 miles one way to the nearest bookstore or the nearest camera shop. Were it not for UPS, we probably would have vanished altogether by now.
Previously, we lived in the midwest, Ohio and Michigan, and in big cities. I am now retired from another career, so we decided to leave the noise, traffic, crime, cold weather and other aspects of civilization as we knew it, and move to a plot of land that had been in the family since the 1870s.
That was 1995, and it has been wonderful. We built a couple of buildings (with our own hands, no less) and set up a complete darkroom. Recently we sold the property with the darkroom, and I have shifted to digital printing, no darkroom required. We look forward to serving you with our brand of photography. We hope you find something you like on this site. Anyway, thanks for dropping by.
