Painted hills are one of the three units of John Day Fossil Beds National Monument, Wheeler County. The hills derive their name from delicately colored soil stratifications, which appear yellow, red, golden, and black in the afternoon which is jaw dropping stuff. At that moment one can hardly believe their eyes, as to the ever color changing hill. The entire landscape looks stunning as if a canvass painted on the drawing board of an artist. Appropriate title indeed- Painted Hills.
