This abandoned lighthouse stands on the southern shore of Lake Superior, and about 15 miles west of the much better known Whitefish Point. The light, which is now lost, was 58 feet above the surface of the lake, and about 48 feet above the base of the lighthouse. It was completed in 1904, and decomissioned in 1993.
This picture was taken in the summer of 1996. In November of the same year, most of the small building in the foreground was destroyed by erosion of the soil underneath. The future looked bleak for the lighthouse.
However, some local citizens launched an effort to save the building. Ownership was turned over to the county, and a nonprofit organization was formed to work for the lighthouse. They have a fine website, which gives more detail than I can include here. Shoreline erosion has been halted by bringing in stone. The tower has been repainted, the building is open most weekends, and a number of other initiatives are under way. The prospects are good for saving this landmark.
