This light stands beside the entrance to the once-bustling port of Eagle Harbor on the Lake Superior shore of Michigan's Upper Peninsula. Copper mining days are gone, and harvested timber no longer travels by water, so Eagle Harbor has become a small and quiet village.
The first light on this site was established in 1851, and it has been modified several times. The 1871 date on the lintel above the door is the time of construction of the present structures. The house is now occupied by a maritime museum operated by the Keweenaw County Historical Society. This is one of the lighthouses that does not look much like a lighthouse is supposed to look.
