This is the largest known kiva in Chaco Canyon, and one of the largest in the southwest. It is about 66 feet in diameter and about 12 ft deep. It is very nearly a perfect circle.
Most kivas are covered, and it seems probable that this one was. If so, that roof was some piece of work. There is evidence that there were four vertical wood members near the center of the kiva, which could have helped to support the roof. They were about 2 ft in diameter.
Nothing too surprising about this, but the amount of timber required to form a complete roof resting on these supports must have been immense, and the problems of getting all these timbers in position and fixed in place were enormous.
