Tule Mountain (C)

Tule mountain is located near the western entrance of Big Bend National Park. It is just south of the road between the Maverick entrance and Panther junction, and about two miles from the entrance.

It rises 1,100 feet above the desert floor, and the top is at 3,838 feet above sea level. The top of the mountain is a 200 ft layer of hard material, Tule Mountain Trachysandesite, an extruded lava. This has resisted erosion while the softer surrounding materials have been removed.

The picture was taken just before sunset, in November 2004. At this time of year, the sun is near its most southerly position at sunset. In June, much more of the near side of the mountain would be sunlit.
