Lajitas Mesa (C)

From this viewpoint, this looks like an isolated peak, but it is one end of a narrow strip of trachyte, an extruded lava flow. Underneath this strip are various tuffs. The hard trachyte has resisted erosion, and thus formed the peak. It is about 1300 feet above the town of Lajitas, and is visible from most parts of town.

Lajitas is on the Rio Grande River. In times past, it was a significant border crossing point, but crossing here is now prohibited by the US, on security grounds. The town is now part of a large resort, which is being upgraded and redeveloped.
