Juniper Canyon, Big Bend NP

This was taken from the Lost Mine Trail, about a mile from the trailhead. This point is listed in the Big Bend Natural History Association Hiker’s Guide as one of the finest views in the park. Based on reasonably extensive experience with views in Big Bend National Park, including this one, I am inclined to agree with this assessment. However, I would raise the question of the haze so obvious in this photograph. That romantic haze in the distance is very attractive, except that is seems probable it was due to coal-burning electric power plants far away as Mexico and Ohio.

I have been back to this same point twice, since this picture was taken, and both times, the haze was obvious, but substantially less than here. However, I was not motivated to take the picture on these subsequent visits. Moral: romantic haze can be valuable, even if it is due to power generation. I admit it: I am a Green, but I am a photographer first.
