Rock House (C)
The principal interest in Big Bend is the natural features, which have been formed over the millenia by volcanic and erosion processes, However, in the past few centuries, there has been human presence in the area.
After formation of the National Park, most of the evidence of this human habitation has been removed, though a few items have been left. This former farm./ranch house is between Castolon and Santa Elena Canyon, and is just off the road.
The stone cliff in the background is part of the Sierra Ponce, which lies in Mexico. The house is in the US, and the Rio Grande flows along the base of the Sierra Ponce, but cannot be seen from this point. The house is only about 200 feet from the river, and perhaps 50 feet above the usual low water level.
