Sawtooth Mtn., Davis Mountains (C)
This aptly named peak rises to 7,686 feet, the third highest in the Davis Mountains. It is close to both Mt. Livermore and Pine Peaks, which are the highest and second highest respectively.
These columns are igneous intrusions, which did not reach the surface. If they had, they would be flat on top. Now the highest peak is about 1,800 feet above the point where the picture was taken. The message is that at least 1,800 feet of softer rock has been eroded away since those intrusions were thrust upward. It is amazing what can be done in 30 million years or so, and without the help of any branch of government.
