Colorado Canyon on River Road (C)
This canyon is located on The River Road or El Camino Del Rio, also known as FM 170, about halfway between Study Butte and Presidio. That is about 30 miles from each. The gorge cut by the Rio Grande is some 560 feet deep at this point.
Before the road was built, there was a dirt road here, known as Muerte del Burro, or "death of the donkey", a tribute to the steep grades on both sides of what is still called simply "The Big Hill". This photograph was taken from the top of the hill. We are looking upstream, with Mexico on the left, and the US on the right.
